General questions
A separating compost toilet has three main pieces: separating insert, urine canister, and a solids container. All of these work together to make sure your camping toilet is dry and smell free! The separating insert funnels the urine into the canister, while the solids are kept separate in their own container lined with a bag and a drying litter material. To learn more, you can check out our page: "How Does a Composting Toilet Work?".
This self contained toilet has all the essentials needed for you to "go" on the road. In each Trelino®, you would have the following:
- The exterior
- The toilet seat/ separating insert. For the Evos, the lid would be attached to this insert with hinges. The Origins have a separate, wooden lid.
- 1 urine canister
- 1 canister lid with membrane closure inserted
- 1 spare, closed lid for the urine canister
- 1 solid waste container
- 10 bags to line the solids container
All you need is some TP and a litter material then you are ready to go!
The value in our product comes from our high standards of production and a conscience towards our partners, suppliers and employees. We want to do justice to everyone in our supply chain and our company by producing the toilets in Germany, under fair conditions.
We also have committed to high standards of production. To take a stand against disposable culture, we have designed and built our toilets for longevity. Made from high-quality plastic, each Trelino® is meant to far outlast lesser made products.
Nope! A Trelino® is a urine diverting toilet which keeps everything as dry and smell free as possible. As long as you are using a good litter material to cover your solids, they should be dried out and have no smell which means you don’t have to empty the bags after each go! Depending on the size of your Trelino®, the bags hold between 3 and 12 number 2's.
Origin
Named because they were our original design and model, our Origins were made as a sturdy option to reinvent the standard approach to separating toilets. They have a unique composition with the bodies, toilet seats, and separating inserts made of high quality polyethylene plastic (PE). Those are combined with wooden lids made of birch multiplex so that they can double as seats or stools so you can really get the most out of one in your limited space.
Some features:
- Robust and durable body
- Strong wooden lid
- Removable seat with urine separator
- Low weight, easy to transport (11 - 15 lbs. depending on model)
Evo
Our Evo series is our brand-new product series that we launched in the fall of 2022. It was designed to be even more lightweight, convenient and comfortable than our previous product lines. Therefore it is probably the lightest composting toilet on the market and ultra portable.
Both the body, made of ABS, material of the highest standard, and the containers, made of out of high quality PE, are made of recyclable plastic and are resistant to aqueous chemicals.
Some features:
- Ergonomic seat (like at home feeling)
- Ultra lightweight (9 - 11 lbs. depending on model)
- Soft-close automatic lid
- Clean design
While our toilet is made to accommodate anyone of any age, there are some factors to be aware of in order to get the best use out of your Trelino®. Younger children can use the toilet, but we strongly recommend that they are supervised while doing so as this is not a toy.
You can start by using the 10 bags that we include in your Trelino® order. These are thicker bags made from recycled materials that will make sure your waste stays in the bag and doesn’t leak through. You can also use bags made from compostable material if you are looking to compost.
The correct sitting position is crucial for the best possible function of a composting toilet. For anatomical reasons, this differs for women and men.
Handling
For other types of toilets, you might use a fan to counteract condensation, which accelerates the drying process of the solids and ensures that fragrances quickly dissolve into thin air.
This is not necessary for your Trelino® because you would use a litter material after each use which dries out the solids and removes the smell. On top of that, the emptying cycles are quite frequent so you can very quickly dispose of your bag.

Diarrhea is not a problem when using a composting toilet. Actually, having one so close should help you in those emergencies. You only need to sprinkle on more litter after the fact to help absorb any extra liquid.
Urine can easily be disposed of in a toilet connected to the sewer system. Diluted, it is also suitable as fertilizer for the home garden or the raised bed on the balcony. The bag with the solids can be disposed of similarly to a diaper or dog poo bag. We recommend checking local regulations for disposal guidelines. Conditionally, composting is also possible. The urine canister and solids container can be emptied independently of each other.
There are a variety of different sprinkles you can use in your solids container. We recommend small animal litter or coconut coir. While these are our top suggestions, there are still numerous alternatives that our customers use. For more detail on these options, you can read our page "Consider Your Litter".
We have created these composting toilets in order to promote sustainability and to take a stand against chemicals. The separator is what gets this job done. By separating liquids from solids, dried material is now ideal for compost as long as the correct accessories are used. These include compostable bags as liners and organic litters which also prevent smell.
Yes! Even after just going number 1, you can drop the toilet paper into the solids bucket. After wet toilet paper is dropped in, it should be covered with a little bit of litter in order to keep the smell away. Types of toilet paper which are best for composting are organic, print free options. Additionally, hygiene products such as tampons, pads, and diapers should not be thrown into the solids container.
Cleaning
Cleaning a composting toilet is as simple as its use. The household remedy diluted citric acid or vinegar has proven its worth.
The urine canister should be rinsed out with vinegar or citric acid (can also be used diluted) after every, every second emptying. To do this, allow the acetic or citric acid to act for a while and shake. This will loosen any deposits.
Installation & applications
Yes! The Trelino® Evo models can be kept in wet conditions as they are made of plastic and won’t be prone to mold or warp. The Trelino® Origin options have wooden lids but can also be used in the wet bath. However, the lids should have a finishing oil applied beforehand to make them more water resistant. For each model, we do recommend that the toilets are given time to dry so that there is no mildew buildup around them.
Your Trelino® can be used almost anywhere! You can carry it with you to do your business in the great outdoors or keep it installed in a camper van or even in a cabin. With the variety of sizes available, you can decide which space is the perfect fit for you and your toilet.
Trouble Shooting
You can clean your composting toilet with diluted concentrated vinegar. This remove all urine residues and odors from your composting toilet.
Afterwards, make sure that the composting toilet dries out well before you use it again.
The solids tank of your composting toilet will smell if the waste cannot dry well. Therefore, drying must be optimized. Try using either more litter or different litter. With this you can already achieve significant differences. However, to significantly improve the air circulation, the use of a fan would be recommended. This transports the moist warm air outside, so that everything can dry well.
If you notice an odor coming from the urine canister, it is probably urine scale. The use of table vinegar, which you can leave to soak in for a longer period of time, will remove the deposits. Sometimes a stubborn deposit requires several applications. In the future, prevent urine scale by filling the urine canister with a little vinegar or lemon solution after every, or at the latest after every second, emptying of the urine. Let the solution soak in and shake vigorously once so that all deposits can dissolve.
While a Trelino® can be used in any weather, there are some tips we recommend for differing temperatures. In very hot weather, toilets should be emptied more often as they can become more prone to smells. In very cold temperatures, our toilets should be given more opportunities to air out. The difference in temperatures between the contents of the toilet and the colder weather can cause condensation and slow down the composting process. To help air out your toilet, you can install a vent attachment or take it outside to breathe with the lid off periodically.
Care tips
Please make sure that you ventilate your wood separation toilet regularly to prevent moisture from accumulating in it. Wood as a natural material can react to persistent humidity. If urine or water does get into it, make sure it dries out before using it again. Effective microorganisms can also be used to treat urine spills.
We recommend leaving the separation toilet open when not in use for a longer period of time, so that moist air cannot accumulate in it. Persistent moisture, even in the form of humidity, can lead to mold over time.
