If your toilet is smelling, there are only two reasons that could be. Number 1…or number 2… Thankfully, we can offer solutions for both!
The solids tank of your composting toilet will smell if the waste cannot dry out properly. Therefore, drying must be optimized. First, you can try using either more litter or a different litter. With this you can already smell the difference. However, if you are still having issues, the use of a fan would be recommended. This transports the moist warm air outside, so that everything can dry well.
If you notice an odor coming from the urine canister, it is probably urine scale. To give your urine canister a deep clean, you can pour in your cleaning solution. If you have been diluting the cleaner, you would want a more concentrated version of it before pouring it in. Let it sit for a few hours or overnight. Once it has sat and is poured out, you can lightly scrub the scale off the interior of the canister.
To prevent smell in the urine canister, make sure that you aren’t cleaning it with just water or that your cleaning solution doesn’t have too much water in it.
